30th April
Had a lie in as it was lashing down. I haven’t mentioned the rain yet, it started as we left and hasn’t significantly stopped since. Last night we finished up cooking and sitting in a recess under the eaves of a shower block that isn’t open till high season. We could still see the birds on the lake though, and we had a lovely, if different night. We decided to search out Le Clercs, a supermarket much lauded by rob and nick but one we had yet to see. We drove to Bar le duc, which according to yeti is number thirty two on the Chinese menu. Huge advertising signs were aplenty and we soon found it. Although it was big and packed with quality food we couldn’t help feeling a tad disappointed. Perhaps all of the lauding, regarding staff on roller blades as it is so big, and you can buy anything from a nice piece of duck to a garden shed, via a new trailer meant we had overly high expectations. As we drove back we realised that we had, in all probability, gone to the smallest Le Clerc in the land.
Once we were back we took Ace for a walk around the lake, chatting enthusiastically about tomorrow. Visiting the great champagne houses, tasting sessions, learning the history, admiring the architecture, tomorrow was the day. We popped into reception to find out the best places to go and the girl cheerfully told us to go to Reims, the champagne town, the town miles away in the wrong direction that we fastidiously bypassed yesterday. Bugger. Not to worry we always drank Cava anyway.
Restaurant for tea tonight as it’s still raining, it’s starting to remind me of those books I read as a kid about the Somme. But at least we’re all warm and dry in our yert!
